Snow alert 18th March 2018
We have heavy snow across the farm and it is still snowing, the wind is now blowing it into drifts.
The farm's driveway will only be passable on foot. We will be feeding the red kites at 2pm

The recent video of the kites being fed a couple of days ago has provoked both positive and negative comments. Some concerns were raised which we would like to address:
The kites visitng the feeding centre are not tame in any way; they are native to this area and they primarily feed naturally – they only get a ‘top-up’ feed from us. Different kites visit on different days – we know this because a proportion of them are tagged.
We have a thriving small bird population both on the farm and in the locality and we have an abundance of field mice and other rodents; we are not a zoo, nor a theme park; Gigrin Farm is a working sheep farm, and the Red Kite Centre is only open to the public on a part time basis.
On the day the video was taken the number of kites was unusually high because the kites were not able to get their normal prey due to the severe snow.
Red Kites were in danger of extinction and became protected. Thankfully they are now off the endangered list and the re-emergence of Red Kites has been a most successful conservation project.
The Kites in the Chilterns and further afield in England are not from Wales; they were introduced from the continent by the RSPB.
The RSPB was instrumental in the Gigrin Feeding Station being set up 25 years ago.
In addition to the sheep on the farm we do have other animals such as dogs, cats, peafowl, hens, guinea fowl, guinea pigs and donkeys. The birds and the cats roam freely and we respectfully ask that our visitors do not approach them, chase them, feed them, or play with them. The guinea pigs are housed in a large enclosure. The dogs are now kept in their kennels during opening hours, and the donkeys are either housed in their barn or are out in the fields.

The driveway is passable with care as the snow is now thawing.
We still have snow on the fields and surrounding hills, providing a beautiful backdrop for photographing the Kites.
Sensible clothing and footwear is needed.

Snow or no snow, the kites still have to be fed, a bit late getting to them yesterday! The tractor wouldn't start and the farm 4x4 got stuck trying to get to the hides .......... took the meat to them by hand in the end ...... we were late, but they were ready for us !

We have a light covering of snow today.
The forecast is for more snow over the next few days, which will present wonderful photographic opportunities.
In the event that we have continued snow we will open the farm on Thursday and Friday (normally we are closed on these days but if the snow is here it is too good an opportunity to miss).
We will provide daily updates.

It is with regret that we announce our campsite will not be re-opening on 1st March. We have received a huge rates demand from the Council which amounts to more than we received in income from the campsite last year so it is no longer financially viable to continue.
We will be able to honour bookings for the Royal Welsh Week, and we are still able to accommodate one-off caravan rallies.
Our thanks to those of you who have stayed on our site over recent years. We have valued your custom and we are sorry that we can no longer offer this facility.
